SMR Adoption In India: Business Potential, Trends and Commercialization Approaches

The Indian nuclear power program is one of the most vibrant globally. The government of India is planning to spend $3.65bn annually on advanced large reactor and SMR programs in the immediate near terms with an annual requirement of building 8-10 SMRs, 4-5 years down the line with an element of localization into it. With over 7 GWe installed nuclear capacity, 15.7 GWe under construction projects and further 25.8 GWe proposed capacity to be built up, India offers business opportunities across the entire spectrum of plant lifecycle of NPPs. A business potential of $125bn has been estimated for the projects in pipeline.

To gain further insights on the Indian nuclear market, Vinday Khanduri, NBP's Head of India spoke with GR Srinivasan who is an eminent nuclear expert in India and an author of the book "Nuclear Powers the Global Energy Transition: Global and Indian Scenarios". He is the former Director (Projects) at Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) and former Vice Chairman at Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB).
