NECSA Wants to Drive SMR Program in South Africa
One of the most exciting developments in South Africa's nuclear renaissance is the Nuclear New Build Programme (NNBP), aiming to procure 2500MW of nuclear power by 2024. Two potential sites, Koeberg near Cape Town and Thyspunt near Port Elizabeth, have been identified for this ambitious initiative.
In addition to the NNBP, South Africa is setting its sights on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). The Nuclear Energy Corporation of South Africa (NECSA) aspires to lead the charge in this transformative technology. SMRs offer the potential to replace coal fleets, making South Africa's energy generation cleaner and more sustainable.
