TÜNAŞ Granted Owner Status To Build Türkiye’s 2nd Nuclear Power Plant - Sinop

Türkiye Nükleer Enerji A.Ş. (TÜNAŞ) has a crucial mission ahead - spearheading the "founding" of the Sinop nuclear power plant project. As a key player in the Turkish nuclear market, TÜNAŞ plays a vital role in driving the country's economic growth and energy security ambitions. Nuclear energy offers clean, stable, reliable, and cost-effective electricity, making it a crucial tool in decarbonizing the economy and ensuring a stable energy supply for Türkiye.

Though newly established, TÜNAŞ has already achieved a major milestone. It was granted the prestigious "Owner" status on January 27th, 2023, for its application to build a nuclear power plant in the Sinop Site. The project's status remains under negotiation, and it's essential to note that discussions with various parties including Russia and South Korea have been ongoing for several years. The Sinop Nuclear Power Plant project was initially planned as a joint venture with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and French Areva, however, the deal failed. Therefore TÜNAŞ's emergence reflects a new direction in fulfiling Türkiye’s nuclear energy ambitions. As TÜNAŞ takes on its ambitious tasks, it becomes a vital piece in realizing Türkiye’s potential as a prominent nuclear energy player. With its commitment to nuclear energy as a pivotal component of the nation's energy mix, TÜNAŞ sets a clear path towards a sustainable and secure energy future.

While TÜNAŞ is solely responsible for the planning phase of new nuclear power plants, it will share the responsibility during the development, construction, and operation phases with its international partners.

The planning phase of such long-run projects requires comprehensive work and preparations as follows:

  • Evaluation of the feasibility of new nuclear technologies and projects

  • Investigation and licensing of sites foreseen for nuclear power plant new build projects in compliance with international standards and national legislation

  • Establishing partnership with international nuclear organizations for exchange of knowledge, best practices and experiences in the journey toward excellence in nuclear safety and reliability

  • Establishing the technical basis of the contracts that constitute the framework and content of nuclear power plant new build projects

  • Development of basic planning instruments (owner’s requirements, skills matrix, nuclear training center development plan, nuclear supplier development plan etc.) necessary for the realization of new nuclear power plant new build projects

  • Establishing state-of-the-art infrastructure systems of TUNAS, equipped to support the dynamic and transformative nature of these ambitious endeavors, empowering the organization to take on the challenges of tomorrow with confidence.

Mr. Necati Yamaç CEO of Türkiye Nuclear Energy Company (TÜNAŞ) will be attending and speaking at the Türkiye NBP 2023 conference and exhibition which will take place 6-8 November in Antalya. This industry meeting is hosted by Nükleer Teknik Destek Anonim Şirketi (NÜTED A.Ş.).

Mr. Yamaç has also recently published a book - “Half a Century Journey of Turkey For Nuclear Power Plant - With Recent Developments and Frequently Asked Questions”.

An exclusive technical site-visit to the Akkuyu nuclear plant site is also scheduled as part of Türkiye NBP 2023

Türkiye NBP 2023 strives to fulfill two main objectives:

  1. The first objective is obtaining insights on Türkiye’s current & future nuclear power programs

  2. The second objective is to showcase the Turkish nuclear journey as a role model for emerging nuclear countries to emulate. With its strategic vision, prudent policies, and commitment to safety, Türkiye has demonstrated its potential to serve as an example for other nations seeking to harness the benefits of nuclear energy.
