Soaring Electricity Prices + Depleting Gas Reserves Pushes Philippines Towards Nuclear Energy

In August 2022, The Philippines House of Representatives organized the Special Committee on Nuclear Energy and elected Mark Cojuangco as its chairperson. In March 2023, The House Committee on Nuclear Energy voted to approve a consolidated substitute bill for a comprehensive atomic regulatory framework, creating for the purpose the Philippine Atomic Regulatory Commission.
Zaf Coelho had a chat with Mark Cojuangco in this edition of NBP Hotseat to discuss about the current state of nuclear energy sentiments in the Philippines, the commissioning of the Bataan nuclear power plant (which was built but never operated!) and why there is an urgent need for the Philippines to embark on a civil nuclear energy program.
