Türkiye Aims To Be Self-sufficient In All Areas Of The Nuclear Industry By 2050
Türkiye's pursuit of nuclear energy has led to significant developments and collaborations in various aspects of the sector. The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (MENR) has been at the forefront, spearheading studies, forging partnerships, and promoting education to advance the country's nuclear capabilities. One of MENR's initiatives involved conducting a comprehensive study to evaluate the local supplier capabilities for both nuclear and non-nuclear safety-related activities. The findings from this study will lay the foundation for a capacity improvement plan, aiming to enhance the participation of Turkish companies in construction activities for nuclear power plant (NPP) projects, including the Akkuyu NPP.
The Akkuyu NPP project, a cornerstone of Türkiye's nuclear ambitions, is set to contribute significantly to the country's economy and job market. With over 20,000 new jobs created during the construction phase, approximately 8,000 jobs for operation, and more than 10,000 jobs in manufacturing, the project demonstrates the potential for job growth and economic development.
To ensure the success of the Akkuyu project and maximize local involvement, a Localization Working Group has been established. Comprising key stakeholders such as the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, the Project Company-Akkuyu Nuclear JSC, the main contractor, the Russian State Atomic Energy Company Rosatom, and the main designer Atomenergoproekt, the group collaborates to achieve the target of $6.5 billion in localization within the scope of the Akkuyu NPP Project.
According to Mr. Salih Sari, Head of Department for Nuclear Infrastructure Development at The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, “We have reached a localization of 4.3 billion USD, or 47 percent. In addition, we aim to gradually increase this rate in other nuclear power plant projects and eventually to reach the point of self-sufficiency in all areas of the nuclear industry in the next 30 years.”
