Türkiye Plans To Develop Indigenous Nuclear Technology

Turkish Indigenous Nuclear Technology, a groundbreaking endeavor that showcases Turkiye's commitment to advancing its nuclear power capabilities. In its pursuit of energy independence, Turkish Energy, Nuclear and Mining Research Institute (TENMAK) is exploring various nuclear technologies such as GEN III+, GEN IV and Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technologies. However, the development of a Turkish Indigenous Nuclear Reactor relies on proven technologies while taking into account valuable feedback from existing and upcoming nuclear power plants both within Turkiye and internationally.

TENMAK was established in 2020 with Presidential Decrees No. 4 and 57. TENMAK gathered Turkish Atomic Energy Authority, National Boron Research Institute, Rare Earth Elements Research Institute which were affiliated to the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources and as the Agency, TENMAK carries out its activities in the fields of energy, mining, ionizing radiation, particle accelerators and nuclear technology.

In order to increase the competitiveness of Turkiye and make it permanent, TENMAK, which accepts as a duty to produce new products within the scope of its fields of activity, to develop existing ones and to make it a world leader, cooperates with public and private legal persons, conducts scientific researches and has them made; coordinates, encourages and supports these researches.

Turkiye should emphasize safety, reliability, and cost-efficiency. The lessons learned from the Fukushima nuclear accident serve as a crucial reference point, urging Turkiye to adopt the highest standards of safety and proven technology. By doing so, Turkiye should intend to build a robust and secure nuclear infrastructure that prioritizes the well-being of its citizens and the environment.

Furthermore, the significance of economic competitiveness in the global nuclear power landscape. To this end, considerable attention should be placed on improving cost-efficiency and making Turkish Indigenous Nuclear Technology economically viable when compared to other nuclear power plants worldwide. By focusing on cost-effectiveness, Turkey could to ensure the long-term sustainability and affordability of its nuclear power endeavors.

Senior officials from TENMAK will be speaking and participating in the Turkiye NBP 2023 conference and exhibition which will take place 6-8 November in Antalya. This industry meeting is hosted by Nükleer Teknik Destek Anonim Şirketi (NÜTED A.Ş.). For more information, www.nuclearbusiness-platform.com/turkiye/tnbp-2023
